A set of two 50-sheet notepads costs $8.00 (orders of six or more
are only $7.00 per set). Shipping and handling is free on every order.
| Writing Tip #11: |
Don't follow "inside" with "of" when
all you need is "inside." "Inside of" is correct,
however, when you mean "less than" or "fewer than."
We should be inside the city limits before long probably inside
of two
hours.

| Writing Tip #50: |
Don't carelessly use "literally" just for emphasis;
use it when you're being actual.
Probably not: I literally laughed my head off.
Quite possible: The drug reaction made him literally afraid of his shadow.
|
| Writing Tip #55: |
You can often avoid awkward wording like "he/she" or "him
or her" by changing the context from singular to plural.
Awkward: Every employee must safeguard his or her key documents.
Better: All employees must safeguard their key documents.
|
| Writing Tip #67: |
Do you "peak interest" or "pique it"? You want "pique" meaning "to
arouse."
My new neighbor's unusual hours have piqued my curiosity.
|
| Writing Tip #75: |
A single exclamation point adds plenty of emphasis. Don't go
over the top with multiple exclamation points. "Second quarter
sales rose 61 percent!!!" doesn't look professional.
(Even the correct use of exclamation points should be sparing so they retain
impact.)

| Writing Tip #89: |
Although your writing should sound natural, watch out for adjectives
like "awesome," "fabulous," "incredible," and "tremendous" in
more formal documents. They can make writing seem less professional,
and they aren't specific. Why was the staff retreat "tremendous"? |
